Once upon a time…

Day 18: Tell a story from your childhood. Dig deep and try to be descriptive about what you remember and how you felt.

This isn’t really one specific story, but one of my favorite things to do when I was younger was hang out with my Grandma Jerry and my Grandpa Carl. I spent a lot of time at their house with them, and I hate that my sister didn’t get to know Grandpa Carl as long as I did.

Grandpa Carl drove an old brown pick up truck. He loved to work in his garden, and usually had on a straw hat when he was outside. He used to drive me around on his tractor, and I loved jumping in the manure to “help him.” I was his princess, you see.

When we would come inside, my Grandma Jerry would make him some roast beef sandwiches. I would help by transporting them from the kitchen to the living room. Funny thing, for whatever reason…the roast beef never actually made it to Grandpa Carl. I am not quite sure where it went….I of course wouldn’t eat. Nope not me!

Grandpa Carl was a Steelers fan, and when he watched the games he would drink his beers. He would leave just a little in each bottle, and place them on the side of his chair. I may or may not have been hiding behind the chair, snacking on my cheese curls and consuming the remainder of his beer. I mean, he left it in there for me, right?!

Grandpa Carl loved his cigars. He would have a box of them in their house, and I would love to open the box and smell them. I still have one of his cigar boxes to this day. Every time I open it, it reminds me of him!

I already told you all about how my Grandma Jerry let me make a fort with her couch cushions. She also had a swing set and sand box outside for me. It was one of those green turtle sand boxes, with the shell as a lid. She would flip the lip upside down and make a little mini swimming pool out of it for me too!

Grandma Jerry would always take me to yard sales on Saturdays! I used to love to walk around with her and see what kid of treasures we could find. My sister and I also attended church with her every Sunday. I went to Sunday school in the mornings, but I would attend the adult church service with her so I could spend more time with her! I loved sitting next to her and seeing all of her friends too.

Yup, spending time with Grandpa Carl and Grandma Jerry is one of my favorite past times as a child. I wish they were both still with us today. I would love to be able to talk to them as an adult. Grandpa Carl passed away when I was in 1st grade, and Grandma Jerry passed between my 10th and 11th grade year.

Found your site through the challenge. I loved that you were so close to your grandparents. My family and I are moving closer to my family for that exact reason.
