On Being Thankful

Thanksgiving is tomorrow, and everyone likes to take time to reflect on what they are thankful for. I have plenty of things to be thankful for; my husband, family, dogs, our home, my job, friends, health, food, this blog and all the people I have connected with. The thing is, shouldn’t we be reflecting on that every day? Not just the big obvious things either, but all the little things we take for granted…

Pain relievers, toilet paper, extension cords, soap, washing machines, light bulbs, coffee, cars, beer, HVAC systems, chocolate, and the list goes on and on.

So as we enter in to this holiday season, every time you get frustrated because four different people want you to come to their house to celebrate on the same day…be thankful that you have those four people in your lives who care enough to want you there.

When your child is screaming in the store and wants all 987 toys they see in front of them, take a deep breath and be thankful that your child is healthy enough to want those toys. Some parents will spend their holiday in the hospital with a child fighting for their lives, or mourning the one they lost or never got to meet.

And when you are stuck in the holiday mall traffic, be thankful that we have men and women every day who are risking their lives for our country to have freedom and petty things like commercialism.

And of course, Wednesday isn’t really Wednesday without a few confessions.

Confessions in ecards

.

The greatest loss of the 90's.

This is true.

You know it!

Truth.

So many of my friends will attest to this

There is always something to be thankful for, but it’s sad how quickly we forget what we have for what we want! Great post, friend!

And your Ecards made me laugh, as usual!

It is sad people forget how lucky they have it when they are trampling each other for a sale, but always something to be thankful for every day. Happy Thanksgiving.

I’m loving all the thankful lists! I know we should do it all year round but it’s what I really love about Thanksgiving. Family time and appreciating what we have. Also food.

I try to think of this periodically. After Hurricane Sandy (I live in Staten Island) I had no electricity for a few weeks. It was cold, dark and the tunnel that my bus takes to get me into NYC had flooded so my commute was hours long. It really opened my eyes to the luxuries that we take for granted every day. Sometimes it is easy to get caught up in the day to day inertia of our lives and forget the blessings we have.

As I am scrolling down to comment I see the funny about the lady dressing like catwoman! hahaa

Love this post. It is so true. There are silly little things we don’t even appreciate – or maybe a better word is think about. One thing for me is high speed internet. If a page takes 7 seconds to load I think the dang internet is “too slow”.

We definitely get caught up in day to day things. You are right, we should appreciate EVERY day.

Yes! We were just having this conversation with Emry – being thankful for the little things!
And toilet paper is HIGH on my list – as is WINE. hahahahaha Just saying.

Oh the catwoman meme – Yes, I know, I was in the same meeting next to you, but I was totally in a Wonderwoman costume!

And I too, am not the friend you put on speaker phone!

Those last 3 are totally applicable to my life.

And the speakerphone thing.. we had this guy at my last job who would take ALL of his calls on VERY loud speaker phone, his conference calls, his wife, other pilots. He would also talk incredibly loud, since he was on speaker phone and the other person couldn’t hear him so well. Argghhhh.

I make it a point to be grateful every day. I truly believe that’s how to make a life good.
