What Would You Do If…

…you couldn’t fail?

Don't be afraid of failing... but afraid of not giving it your all.

Fear of failure is a real struggle. I mean, no one wants to fail, am I right?!?! I think about all the things I used to dream about doing. Then I think about all the reasons why I think it will never happen.

–Own my own boutique. This has been a dream of mine for a long time. I would love to own my own boutique that carries a variety of clothing for women ages 25-55.. I know that sounds like a wide range, but honestly…it is so hard for the late twenty something and up to find clothes that are age appropriate and of great quality. We are “too old” to shop in the teenage stores and yet we don’t want to look like a frumpy grandmother either. I would carry a variety of sizes to fit every body type.

–Design my own clothing line. This plays into above, but ever since I was younger I would always look at clothes in stores and say things like “this would be perfect if it had this” or “if this had this instead.” Basically, I want to just design things that are pretty.

–Interior Design. When I was in HS, my very first job was at Kirkland’s. I loved everything about home interior. I love helping people pick out pictures, lamps and accessories for their homes. I had a stream of regular clients that would bring in photos of their rooms and ask me to pick stuff out for them. It was so wonderful!!! I so badly wanted to major in design in college, but my dad kindly reminded me that I can’t draw worth a flip and that put a damper on things.

Don't be afraid to fail. Live out your calling #freedom #entrepreneur

Basically, all of these things add up to the fact that one day, I would like to own my own business of some kind. Be my own boss and do all the things I have dreamed of doing. There is this thing called money, and I need to make a steady income. Also, all of these things cost money to start up. Money I don’t have.

I tell other people all the time to not think about what could go wrong, but think of all the things that could go right. Why can’t I take my own advice?

What would you be doing if you were not afraid to fail? If something was holding you back from achieving your dreams?

Don't be afraid to fail

I feel you on this! I think sometimes you just have to go for it- start small and it will help you start on the path towards your dreams!

I think you should go for one of your dreams! Talk to others who have done it, maybe start a small online boutique before you have a huge store. Why not look into a small business loan? As a women you’re a minority so you qualify for a ton of stuff! 🙂

I think these are awesome dreams! They definitely do take money, but one cool thing is that either could be done online and from home at first until you can afford to get bigger. I think you should look into it. Sadly I have to keep reminding myself that I’m not getting any younger so if not now, when?

And in the meantime, if you need practice clients, you can totally redo my wardrobe and decorate my house from afar. You know, to build your portfolio and all 🙂

Um this is a brilliant idea! Nadine seriously, I need help with my house. I cannot decorate for shit. If I send you pictures, will you help me? I might not be able to afford a for real interior design fee but I could totally pay you a little for your assistance? 🙂 See, foot in door.

I agree with Helene, girl just go for it! Sounds like you have been dreaming about this for a long time. Start small, you don’t have to own your own business first, just get your foot in the door. Maybe see if a local boutique owner would be your mentor on the weekends or something, or likewise with interior design. Just go for it!
Honestly, this will sound horrible, but I have never had wild dreams like this. I have never wanted to do anything really, I mean I want to live a happy life and enjoy my job and all that, but my dreams were always travel / be happy. I’m still working on both of them. I will say I have always dreamed of writing a book, but… I can’t write, so. Boo.

OH EM GEE!!! When I was younger I would criticize (quietly) older women who dressed like they were in their 20s because it just wasn’t age appropriate. But then when I saw older women dressing like older women I would criticize (quietly) for dressing like such a fuddy duddy. When I saw women covering themselves up and dressing in cool stuff but not like street walkers I appreciated it. Now I am in that age bracket!

I used to want to design dresses when I was younger. I think you would be great at it!

I love that idea of your boutique. You’re exactly right that I think most of them aim for the 18-27ish range. It can be so hard to find cute stuff sometimes.

I don’t really have a huge desire to run my own business. MFD runs his and that is stressful enough.

I love organizing, I’d do that. And I love decor, but I only want to do it in my home.

Love this post – I might just steal the idea (:

I would shop at your boutique! When you get around to it will you make sure it has an online store!

OMG! I would love to do something in interior design! Homegoods is my happy place!

🙂 I understand and agree completely.

It’s hard to think logistically – but still want to live those dreams.
It’s hard to just GO FOR IT – when in your head you’re crunching the numbers and being practical.

There are things I want to build and grow – Dreams that hang in the air and ask “Will you today?” And I budget them into silence.

One day – I’ll take the leap with those dreams.

I’m also afraid of failing as a mom – and it’s an overwhelming feeling. I try every day to be my best and give Emry my best – but, there are days I feel that I am failing him with the choices I make. (IE: Full-time Career – money pays the bills!)

You could totally do a virtual interior design service!!! So. Many. Ideas.

The fear of failure is REAL. I’m terrified of it. I talk myself out of things on a daily basis. I would totally have published my book by now if not for fear. I need to get over this. I think I smell a new goal…

I would love to be my own boss but the actual truth is I don’t want all the pressure that goes along with it. If I could I would open my own bakery. I think Interior design would be fun and could totally be done without drawings, more like vision boards.

I’m a big fan of punching fear in the face and going for it!! You will definitely not know until you try 😉

I absolutely love this and struggle with this thought of “what if” constantly!! I’d love to own my business and be my own boss!! Hope we all get to our place of it will happen!!

Love this post! I would absolutely love to own my own business, preferably a boutique. I think we actually already talked about our little common dream at happy hour a few weeks ago! 🙂

This is such great timing because I posted about leaving my job today, and taking a huge leap of faith! I really hope you can start your own business soon, I know you can do it!

I love my job and it’s what i wanted to do but i would love to be doing something that had to do with stationary. as in creating cards or something like that… anything stationary makes me happy!

my friend has an online (paper/stationary) shop and the other day she said that she had orders to put together after i left so i forced her to tell me what the orders were so i could package them up for her! i felt legit. 😀

perfect post for me to read today! I just decided to stop my hourly job for a commission one…today! Granted I will ease myself into it but it is still so scary! We can do it!

  • Reply Amanda August 27, 2014 at 1:39 am

It’s so much harder to take our own advice than it is to give it to someone else, isn’t it?! I’m the same way!

  • Reply Miranda August 27, 2014 at 2:21 am

I so love this post, Nadine! Your goals are wonderful! If failure wasn’t an option, I would quit my job, and put all of my effort into becoming a full time writer.
